ABOUT

Prof. Gu Xiaocheng

Professor Gu Xiaocheng (1930-2012) was a professor in the School of Life Sciences, Peking University, China. When she was the head of the Department of Biology (currently the School of Life Sciences), Professor Gu established the Life Science Center in Peking University and headed the State Key Laboratory of Protein Engineering and Plant Genetic Engineering. She also led the effort to establish the State Key Laboratory of Biomembrane and Membrane Bioengineering, and the Center for Bioinformatics (CBI) in Peking University. CBI is the national node of EMBnet. In later years, Professor Gu helped in building the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) and the Center for Pharmaceutical Information and Engineering Research in Peking University.

Professor Gu Xiaocheng served as the chief coordinator representing China for the CUSBEA (China-United States Biology and Biochemistry Examinations and Applications) Program, in the 1980s which brought over 400 students from China to pursue Ph.D. degrees in the US, thus leading the way for Chinese students to study life sciences abroad and return to work in China. She organized a series of conferences that allowed CUSBEA students and others to continue their contacts.

Lifetime Contribution Award

The Board of Directors of the Ray Wu Memorial Fund, Inc., presented a special Lifetime Contribution Award on August 23, 2012, to Professor Gu Xiaocheng in honor of her life-long effort to promote chinese life science scientists around the world.

Gu Xiaocheng Lecture

The Gu Xiaocheng lecture award was established by the Gu Xiaocheng Memorial Fund in 2012. The lectureship recognizes young investigators showing promises to become future leaders in life science research, especially those who work in China. Recruiting overseas scientists to return to China had been Professor Gu Xiaocheng’s long-time passion. The Gu Xiaocheng lecture will be presented at the annual Ray Wu Symposium series. Professor Gu Xiaocheng worked closely with Dr. Ray Wu in many areas to promote scientific exchanges between China and the United States. This lectureship also commemorates the friendship between Dr. Ray Wu and Professor Gu Xiaocheng, and their shared legacy.

The Gu Xiaocheng Memorial Fund

The Board of Directors of the Ray Wu Memorial Fund, Inc., has decided to establish a special fund, the Gu Xiaocheng Memorial Fund, in memory of Professor Gu Xiaocheng. The fund will be administered by and under the governance of the Ray Wu Memorial Fund, Inc, a nonprofit 501c(3) organization (tax ID number is 11-3840803).

This special fund will be used to support the Gu Xiaocheng Lectureship for designated speakers at the annual Ray Wu Symposium. Professor Gu Xiaocheng worked closely with Dr. Ray Wu in many aspects to promote scientific exchanges between China and the United States. Inviting overseas scientists to return to China had been Professor Gu’s long-time passion. We enthusiastically support the effort of setting up the Gu Xiaocheng Memorial Fund to commemorate the friendship between Dr. Ray Wu and Professor Gu Xiaocheng, and their shared legacy.
